Decisions about the application

I applied because I believed Oxbridge to be the place where I would fit in best, both academically and socially. However, in retrospect I realise this not to be the case. If I had realised this beforehand I would not have applied, but unfortunately I only came to this conclusion after my interview (but before I received my decline).

After reading the respective prospectuses, and researching each university carefully, I finally decided upon Cambridge. This was mainly because the course seemed more challenging, and I enjoy a challenge. Cambridge also seemed to have a slightly stronger reputation mathematically.

Several reasons. Chiefly, it has a rich history of mathematicians who went there and also has an immensely strong reputation for the quality of it's maths candidates. It is also a large college (the largest if I recall correctly) and this appealed to me. The architecture of the college is also inspiring.

No extra tuition or practice interviews. Some informal advice instead.

Yes. (see above). To prepare I just read over my A level texts and memorised appropriate formulae. In the actual exam I decided to attempt the questions which looked the hardest in order to impress the interviewers. In retrospect, I should have attempted the easy looking ones instead.

Had a one hour test. 10 questions. A couple seemed to test general maths ability, the others seemed to test specifics to A level (eg. integrals).

After the test, there was an hour long individual "discussion" with two cambridge chaps.

The interviewers reviewed my test and went over any slip ups I made.

Shirt, tie, trousers, shoes, socks etc. Formal wear seemed appropriate.

Very impressive.

Rooms I looked in seemed rather majestic.

I found the people who intereviewed me a mixed bag. One seemed generally nice. However the other seemed a bit arrogant and made the odd snide comment, which I just accepted.

I didn't meet any.

Final stage

Received letter. I was a bit shocked to see rejection, but it was well written.

Looking back

Probably not. Certainly not Cambridge though. Possibly Oxford. If I was the same person that I am now, I dont think so.
