Decisions about the application

That it's the best place in the world for my subject.

I love the city of Cambridge, and didn't at all mind the fact that it is entirely taken up by the Uni. Also, Oxford didn't offer my subject (Just Philosophy on its own)

I had been there a number of times, liked it, it seemed the right size, and was on the Backs. Also on the advice of our universities person.

No, except for a single practise interview.

Read lots of different introductory philosophy stuff, and be very sure you're interested in the subject (and thus show it).

Yes, but not somehting that could really be prepared for.

I had two subject interviews

Lots and lots

Sidney has very good first year rooms, and then a variety of houses and halls (most second years live out, and third years live in again). Most rooms have sinks and fridges (which are hired for 10 pounds per term). All rooms in college should be networked by Michaelmas 2000. Nice, large, and generally friendly, some mix between years, but not much.

Supervisors I presume (tutors are something else at Cambridge). There isn't a supervisor for Philsophy at Sidney, so I go elsewhere

Very friendly. Everyone talks to everyone else, and cliques aren't welcomed, but rather ignored and pushed out mostly. Very nice atmosphere

Final stage

I screamed, was very upset, waited weeks and weeks and got a pool offer

Looking back

Yes. Definitely. It's brilliant, and worth the work. Still, it was a *lot* of stress.

Make absolutely sure you want to do your chosen subject. Accounts vary from suggesting it will be incredibly easy, to the hardest work ever. As with everything you get out what you put in, but don't expect to have an easy ride - you won't.
