Decisions about the application

I preferred the city of Oxford and the theology course looked better.

I visited it on an open day and it had a really nice atmosphere. Not very big, but central and friendly.

Preparation

yes

Yes we had oxbridge meetings and they set up 3 mock interviews for us. Subject teachers set up extra "outside reading" groups (outside the subject)

OAF: Don't worry about writing anything on the "extra info bit" they have your personal statement thats all they really need.
Interview: Make sure you know about any recent developments in the church and have read outside the subject. Don't worry if you don't know the answer, tell them and they will kind of lead you to it.

Interview

no

yes

2 essays. One on the Jewish and Hellenistic influences on the prologue to the fourth gospel and one on the role of women in the fourth Gospel. They were essays I'd done well in and could discuss.

no

I had 2 separate interviews. One with the chaplain who tutors in NT and one with a tutor in OT studies. We mostly discussed the essays I'd written and my personal statement (be very careful that you can talk about every single word or phrase written in this.)

Questions on the historical influences on the bible, ecclesiastical hierarchies, homosexuality in the church (a lot on this), the equality in John's community, whether people with faith had any advantage over those without when studying theology. Why oxford, why theology.

Black skirt, black wrap around top, black shoes and a coat (oxford is very cold) Dress reasonably smart but I only saw one person in a suit.

Impressions

I was only at St Peter's. Not as big and pretty as a lot of the other colleges but easy to get to and a great atmosphere.

Good size rooms but very plain (and with a very small bed.) Bathroom nearby, no kitchens (everyone eats in the dining room.)

Good - Good choice (inc vegetarian etc) Didn't like the breakfasts.

Those that I met seem quite challenging but very friendly.

All very helpful and willing to chat. Very friendly.

Final stage

I got an offer, very pleased.

Looking back

Definitely, I got an offer and even if I hadn't it was a great experience staying in oxford for a couple of days.

Just enjoy the time you spend in oxford and try and keep calm (it's not that scary.)
